Why “is 28 psi too low?” needs more information.
The relevant reference is the vehicle’s specification for that tire position, fitment, load and measurement condition. NHTSA directs drivers to the placard or manual, not a universal number. A sidewall maximum is not the vehicle’s normal operating target.
Our check sheet reports the arithmetic difference from the specification you enter. It does not supply a missing specification or turn an entered value into an approved driving threshold.
Higher after driving is not the same as confirmed overinflation.
Michelin cautions against reducing a warm tire to a cold-pressure target. Record recent driving and arrange a cold recheck under the vehicle instructions. Do not subtract a fixed number to invent the cold reading.
If an actual cold reading is above or below its applicable specification, follow the manufacturer’s adjustment procedure and recheck. Do not ignore a low warm reading merely because you expect heat to explain it.
Can I still drive, and how far?
This website cannot determine a safe distance or time from PSI, a warning light or a photo. If you are driving when a warning or a change in handling occurs, prioritize reaching a safe stopping place as conditions allow, then follow your vehicle’s emergency instructions and obtain appropriate roadside or professional help.
Visible damage, rapid loss, noise or vibration needs assessment. A run-flat designation, a spare or a repair kit has its own vehicle/tire limitations; no generic distance is supplied here. Do not drive simply to gather a second record for this site.
Do pressure changes affect wear, handling or fuel use?
USTMA’s care guide connects improper inflation with tire wear, handling and fuel consumption. That is a reason to use the specified pressure, not to invent extra PSI for mileage or lower it for winter traction.
No fuel-saving percentage, grip improvement or pressure-versus-MPG curve has been measured for your vehicle here. Follow load/towing instructions rather than assuming more air makes an overloaded vehicle acceptable.
